In the Paper Kitchen

Fujimori-san’s paper factory is like a large kitchen.Bark fiber strips are soaked in water and layed out on tables for trimming. The paper makers wear kitchen aprons and hats. Pots boil with mixtures that look like oatmeal. Deckle-edged paper sheets are warming like pancakes on a heated griddle like surface. We are creating something new by building on the 2000 years of traditional wisdom of transforming tough mulberry bark into exceptionally durable paper.

Making Farmer’s Felt

These handmade papers use much longer fibers than standard machine made papers. When soaked in water and strained over a screen by master paper makers these fibers intertwine into a strong layer. Getting an even layer of fibers over the wooden framed screens is deceptively simple looking. A mixture of fibers and water are scooped onto large wooden framed screens. The paper craftsmen skillfully move the frames to allow the water to flow back and forth across the screen interlocking the fibers. This creates a thick layer of fibers, less like paper and more like felt. To remove excess water the sheets are carefully lifted and pressed flat with hand rollers. Polishing each sheet by hand with the famously smooth fresh tsubaki leaf (Japanese camelia) finishes the unique texture. Kozo (mulberry) bark fibers are the strongest of the washi fibers and is the main ingredient in Farmer’s Felt. It is grown as a sustainable farm crop, regenerating every year.

Ecological Farmer’s Felt

Kozo is a completely renewable resource. Branches to make the fibers are judiciously trimmed allowing the plant to grow back yearly. Acid free and archival. Chlorine-free bleaching process used. No OBA (Optical Brightening Agents). No heavy metals used in the dying or coloring. No nitrogen dioxide (NO2) or sulfur dioxide (SO2) are emitted during paper manufacturing. Papers made in an ISO 14001 certified facility. Any waste fibers are recycled in the making process.

Care

Though Postalco Farmer’s Felt is remarkably strong for paper, gentle handling is required. To keep the natural feeling of the material we did not waterproof coat the surface. There is a light water resistant treatment. If your item gets wet, pat dry with a soft cloth to absorb any liquid. Please shade dry in a well ventilated area. If placed near air conditioners or heaters the item may warp. Japanese paper is a natural material so irregularity in the color and size of fibers are part of its character. It is possible for wrinkles and surface variations to appear as well.
